Though she was the goddess of righteous warfare, she was also a goddess of the arts and handicrafts. A story about Athena and mortals deals with a Lydian princess named Arachne who was an exceptional weaver. She was so admired that her arrogance got the best of her. She at last challenged the goddess Athena in a contest. Athena was at first offended by Arachne’s presumptuous nature but accepted the challenge. Athena of course won the contest and afterwards Arachne was so ashamed that she tried to hang herself. Athena wouldn’t let such a talent go to waste and instead changed Arachne into a spider. Her beautiful creations were thus preserved in the spinning of a spider’s web.

These earrings are hand-made and hammered from copper wire. Each has a single turquoise stone that matches the Arachne Necklace. They are post back and measure 1 1/4" in length.
