Athena had a rather unusual birth. Her mother was one of Zeus’ many affairs that bore offspring. In typical fashion Zeus was trying to hide his affairs from his wife Hera so when he learned of Metis’ pregnancy, he feared not only Hera’s wrath but also the prophecy that his child would overpower him. Now Metis was Zeus’ first wife who could change into any creature. Zeus tricked her into turning into a fly and swallowed her whole. Over the next few months Zeus was stricken with intense splitting headaches and it seems as if someone was banging around inside of his head. At last Haephaestus grabbed an ax and spilt open Zeus’ head. Athena sprung out fully-grown and in full war armor carrying a spear and a shield that her mother had made for her while still inside the head of Zeus.
