Persephone was Demeter's beautiful young daughter. One day she was abducted by Hades while picking flowers. Demeter became very depressed over the disappearance of her daughter. She let nothing grow and the earth grew barren. When Demeter discovered that her daughter was in the underworld with Hades, who wanted her for a bride, she pleaded to Zeus to have her returned to her. Zeus agreed but only if Persephone had not yet eaten anything in the underworld. Unfortunately for Persephone she had eaten six pomegranate seeds. An agreement was made that she would remain in the underworld for six months a year, and the other six months she would be reunited with her mother. This is why for six months of the year vegetation and flowers flourish and for six months nothing grows, giving us the seasons we have today. These earrings have Swarovski crystal leaves on the bottom. They represent both Persephone's connection to her mother, and the cold, fruitless underworld.
