"For the Fairest" Necklace
As the Goddess of love many tales of Aphrodite show aid to lovers. Thetis (a sea nymph) was set to marry the mortal Peleus. They had a magnificent wedding, inviting all of the gods and goddesses except for one. Eris - the goddess of discord. This did not sit well with her and in the midst of the happy affair the unwanted guest created distress between the guests. A single golden apple with the inscription "for the fairest" written on it was thrown amongst the guests. Paris, son of the king of Troy picked up the apple. Soon the goddesses Athena, Hera, and Aphrodite surrounded him. Each was sure the golden apple was meant for them. Each in turn, the goddesses offered something to Paris in exchange for the apple. Hera offered him the lordship of all of Europe and Asia. Athena offered him a great victory for Troy over the Greeks. But it was Aphrodite’s offer that tempted Paris. She promised him the most beautiful woman in the world as his bride. At once he chose Aphrodite and was rewarded with Helen, who he then abducted from the Greeks. Thus Paris becomes the instigator of the most famous war in Mythology, The Trojan War. The gold painted shell on this necklace mimics the gold of the golden apple, making it a true piece "for the fairest."
This necklace is made of seashells, Indian stick pen shells, Oyster Shell, Blister Pearl Shell Sticks, Paua Shell Sticks, and Freshwater Pearls. It measures 18 1/2" in length and closes with a gold plated bar and ring toggle clasp.
